Bridge Initiative - Dialogue on Civil society in the Arab worldIntroduction The Arab World is still trying to build its specific position and function in the globalized world. The region is often perceived from an external point of view with a culturalist bias as a « buffer space » between continents, that presents a strong and almost impossible to curb cultural identity. The inclusion of the Arab World in the global economic and cultural space is still to be achieved. In this context, globalization is conceived within the Arab World as a process imposed from the outside, that can’t be influenced nor changed, being out of reach for any attempt to control it. |

Last contributionsIs despondency and loss of self-respect a product of globalization? Many inequalities have been spurred by globalization. The impact is so huge that it has also impacted on citizenry of both wealthy and poor nations. In under-developing countries, the lack of orientation, prompts their government to seek advice from the developed countries’ set in institutions (IMF etc...). Olympiads for Change [Olympiads for Change]Almost everyone agrees: there isn’t a moment to lose as far as the need to change the course of events and raise the awareness of both the citizens of our planet as a whole and those who take collective decisions affecting the future of Humankind. The general feeling of alarm caused by global warming provides a window of opportunity for “revolutionary” partnerships around most major issues. This is an opportunity that the “Olympiads for Change” intends to seize. In the face of nuclear and climatic threat, a gentle colourful revolution could prevail: a Blue Revolution. Blue like the Planet earth seen from the Universe, like water, a common good, like the United Nations that guarantee equal rights to all or like Europe that remains a model of construction and co-habitation to the rest of the world… This competition, transparent and open and lasting almost a full year would allow innovative political creativity and citizenship at a crucial moment in the history of the world to take place. And the conclusion of these Olympiads could provoke a new beginning, starting in 2008. It would entail commitment in promoting sufficiently strong counter powers to redress the unequal balance of power at a global level. And would pay sufficient heed to allow everyone to feel that any one life is really worth another.
What strategies should civil society focus on to impact globalization [Working together]I will first of all start by thanking the Team of Bridge Initiative International and the Generative Dialogue Project for making this event a reality. the conference was indeed conducive and constructive. It is a bright idea to have conceptualised it . The thought is more than welcome. Result of CSR Landscape Survey [C-Change]The Pacific Institute recently completed a survey of perceptions relating to the present and future landscape for CSR initiaitves and instruments. Attached is a summary of the findings. One Life is Worth Another - A Second Wind for the UN and Civil Society [Multi-stakeholder processes]"One life is worth another." In order for the United Nations to instill or revive a sense of legitimacy among the people of the world, it must be guided by the very simple notion that the life of an Arab has the same value as the life of an Israeli; that the life of an African is equal to that of an American or that the life of an Indian is equal to that of an European. |
